Independent testing proves Labconco glove box contains aerosolized nanomaterials effectively

Labconco Corporation submitted its Protector® Stainless Steel ULPA Filtered Glove Box to an independent source to evaluate its ability to contain aerosolized nanomaterials. The testing company was NanoSafe, Inc. which helps clients in business, government agencies, and academic institutions manage emerging nanotechnology environmental health and safety risks.

The containment of aerosolized nanoparticles was adapted from ASHRAE 110-1995, which refers to the requirements for using sulfur hexafluoride as a tracer gas for testing and involves traverse‐testing the glove box window, ULPA exhaust, valves, and transfer chamber doors  during aerosolization of SiO2 (silica dioxide) nanoparticles with a geometric mean diameter of 26 nm.

Within the sensitivity of the test, results indicated no particle leakage from the glove box. In addition, there was no evidence of particle leakage when operated in a fail-safe condition. When the Protector Glove Box was tested with the transfer chamber doors open, the SiO2 nanoparticle concentrations decreased to (<0.10 particles/cm3) within 504 sec for all blower speeds tested. When operated at Labconco’s recommended 50 CFM, the average evacuation time to <0.10 particles/cm3 was 271 sec.
