Michael A. Schaadt, AIA
Principal

Mike Schaadt is a Principal with PGAV Architects, a leading science research and education architecture and planning firm. He has been leading the design of science research and education facilities for 20 years. His design experience encompasses a diverse range of project types and a continuous exploration of emerging trends in interdisciplinary research and academic science education. Mike is a graduate of the University of Kansas. Recent notable projects include work at Midwest Research Institute, The University of Oklahoma’s Stephenson Life Science Research Center, Kansas State University’s Biosecurity Research Institute, The Stowers Institute for Medical Research and The University of Missouri’s new Regional Biocontainment Laboratory.

Steve Helgren is a Project Manager and Laboratory Designer with PGAV Architects, specializing in the programming, planning and design of complex science and research facilities. He leads PGAV’s science and technology studio in the exploration and integration of emerging trends and technologies in the laboratory environment. Helgren is a graduate of the University of Nebraska, and has been with PGAV for 11 years. His recent projects include ongoing work at the Stowers Institute for Medical Research, BioMed Valley Discoveries, Ameripath Laboratories, Midwest Research Institute, The University of Oklahoma’s Stephenson Life Science Research Center, Kansas State University’s Biosecurity Research Institute and a Research Incubator for the Kansas University Medical Center.

He has led a wide variety of projects in sectors including biotechnology, forensic science, universities, pharmaceutical research, and health sciences. His focus is advanced technology for laboratory facilities. He serves on the Board of Directors of the International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories and the US Green Building Council’s Core Committee for the Application Guide for Laboratories. He is a published author and frequent presenter on the future of lab design.

Ken Mohr is a Principal and Senior Lab Planner for Crime Lab Design, a comprehensive source for planning and design of forensic science facilities. His 20 years experience in planning and designing technically advanced laboratories and related support spaces includes nearly 4 million square feet of forensic facilities. He brings specialized knowledge and expertise in all the functional elements of forensic initiatives such as DNA and trace evidence, toxicology, analytical chemistry, histology, teaching labs, computer forensics, quality control, evidence management, autopsy, pathology, International ASCLD standards for lab accreditation, biocontainment, and regulatory requirements.

Susan Halla-Borrelli is a Laboratory Planner and Project Manager with Crime Lab Design. Her experience includes all phases of project development from schematic design through construction documents and construction administration. She masterfully communicates the unique design challenges of forensic laboratories and is a published author in Forensic Magazine.

Randall E. Larsen

Randy Larsen is President of The FWA Group, an architecture firm specializing in the sustainable design of research and educational facilities. Since 1979, Randy has specialized in laboratory and R&D facilities throughout the U.S. and Canada. His work is concentrated in higher education, health science centers, and the biopharmaceutical industry. Currently, Randy is involved with two laboratory projects at Colorado State University (CSU). Both projects, a new Diagnostic Medicine Center for the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, and a new Research Innovation Center were awarded to The FWA Group as a result of winning design competitions as part of the selection process. His recently completed project, the Rocky Mountain Regional Biocontainment Laboratory at CSU, is one of 13 across the country funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases as part of the anti-terrorism initiatives of the Federal Government.

Tim Reynolds has more than 20 years of experience in the field of electrical engineering and engineering project management. He participates in all facets of laboratory projects including grant preparation, programming, and design. Tim has a unique ability to work closely with laboratory personnel, to understand laboratory processes and key design challenges, and to develop creative design solutions that satisfy all project goals and objectives.

With more than 15 years of experience, Rick Wise has worked on many teaching and research laboratory projects. His forte lies in his attention to detail, whether it is writing project specifications, managing phasing options, or providing cost estimates. He brings a multifaceted perspective to the project team by virtue of his previous background as a facilities project manager. His "owner" mentality proves invaluable when it comes to understanding project staging and maintaining project schedules. And as a LEED-accredited professional, he incorporates sustainable technologies into the building design.

Location

The seminar will be held at Labconco Corporation's headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri, which is within a short driving distance of several area hotels. Labconco's auditorium features comfortable seating, fully functional laboratory equipment on display and extensive audio-visual equipment. Part of the seminar's agenda will include fume hood demonstrations in Labconco's airflow testing laboratory, a 500 square foot facility where laboratory conditions can be replicated and ventilation scenarios simulated.

Registration Fee

Early registration fee is $275 but will increase to $300 after April 25.

After receiving your registration form and payment or purchase order, we will mail you a letter confirming enrollment, information on nearby hotels, an area map and transportation information.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations are accepted and fee fully refunded when notification is provided at least 7 days before the session. A 50% refund will be made for cancellations within 7 days of the seminar date.
